Aquarium Update!

Yesterday, I visited Fin & Feather in Oneonta to pick up the cover for the tank. My visit ended with eight new fish for our aquarium! It is still early, but all of the fish survived the first 24 hours. I added:

  • six neon tetras
  • two black mollies (a male & a female)
Take a look:

Black Molly.

Our new neon tetras and the zebra danios swimming together.

Mollies are peaceful fish.

If all of the neons survive, then we will have eight to swim in a school together! keep looking each week for an update. Remember you may write to me at school about summer reading or if you have a question about the fish:

Don't Forget About The Torch Relay

Are you still following the torch relay? Many students have a map to track the relay. Below is the route animation video I shared with students:

There are great links on the Elementary Library webpage to follow the torch relay and to learn more about the Olympics. The opening ceremony is in 33 days!!!

ArtsPower Laura Ingalls Wilder

Guess what is coming to Cooperstown???

Another GREAT production by ArtsPower National Touring Theatre Group...

Laura Ingalls Wilder

Laura and her family travel across America in search of a place they can call home. Facing obstacles such as scarlet fever and eviction from their land, their pioneering spirit and family bonds are tested but never broken. This uplifting story of one of America’s most beloved authors comes to life in ArtsPower’s popular musical.

Our performance is scheduled for April 2013. Keep following us for more details including summer trip and reading ideas to connect to Laura Ingalls Wilder. A special thank you to Mrs. Lippitt for securing this program for our school!

We started an aquarium!

Just a reminder...look with your eyes only please.

This is the neon tetra's favorite hangout.

If you haven't already heard the LMC has an aquarium! So far we have been successful keeping seven fish alive. The aquarium will be in the LMC year round. It is a great way for us to learn about life cycles, responsibility, money, and much more. Here are few highlights:
  •  We have a 20 gallon tank.
  • We have 3 neon tetras, 2 zebra danios, and 2 danio glofish.
  • The ideal temperature is 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Students practice reading the thermometer at eye level for an accurate temperature reading. Our thermometer has a green range to indicate an acceptable temperature for the fish. Look out if it reads above or below the green into the yellow ranges- yellow means caution it is too hot or too cold.
  • How much does it cost to start an aquarium? Students can estimate the cost of starting their own aquarium by adding the total amounts together from receipts. Many students are surprised by how quickly items add up!
